We’re living in the midst of prodigal generation — a generation of people who grew up and ran away on God. Many wish they could come home. Here’s the problem: they just don’t know who they are going to meet when they show up — a loving father, or their older brother.

The church needs to repudiate the attitude of an older brother when it comes to dealing with prodigals, and adopt the posture of a loving father:

…loving fathers are preoccupied with whoever is missing. Older brothers are preoccupied with themselves.

…loving fathers forgive. Older brothers shame.

Imagine church after church turning from an older brother mindset and becoming loving father churches.

agreed! simply reaching people who don’t go to church by nature is scandalous! how cool is it that we are called to be God’s ambassadors? wake up church! do something scandalous, all in the desire to see non-churched people move into a growing relationship with Jesus!

Snap. It’s a double movement, choosing to follow Christ – I think Luke 18:24-34 has a lot to say towards this end.

And just as Paul talks about Christ being all, and in all, we would think there could only be perfect unity in love. Though being in Christ is the ultimate end of all creation, we still largely “know according to the flesh,” and the Word of unity that comes from/in/thru the Spirit clashes with those of us who are unwilling to hear it.

It is haunting to think, that though we be simply excused from the “court’s” “Most Wanted” list, the real horror would be in hearing the subsequent words, “Depart from me, for I never knew you.”

We follow a political savior. May we love as the Messiah loved.

yeah. i admit that in the full context of hirsch’s message at verge2010 it was an astounding thought – and still something i think is of utmost importance – but it doesn’t really feel as “heavy” when extracted like this :]

but i think the key is, growing out of hardships, toward and through endurance, to become something greater than just a “group of people on a journey.” maybe it’s the resonance of acknowledging (instead of denying) the existence of trials, obstacles, etc. in our community that will begin to make us into communitas…?

And I’m not sure what exactly is the difference is between community and communitas. Like…communitas is…sort of….not just living in proximity but being reconciled to?
