A HAIKU FOR PEACE, A HAIKU FOR OLIVIA
leaves stir a silence.
my heart waits to see and know.
the songbird breaks forth.
–
december, cold-grey
in your eyes a soul, alive
peace, be with you, love
–
and beauty arrives
i check the clock, again and
again i say, when?
–
PRAYER OF WONDER
GOD, what have you been up to?
–
in case it’s been a while since you’ve brushed up on your haiku lessons (plural form: haiku), just remember that it is an ancient japanese form of poetry consisting of three lines set to the 5,7,5 meter – usually, but not always – tied to a theme of creation/nature…i wrote these three haiku over the last couple of months, breathing in the brisk morning air and praying for olivia (whose name is intimately bound up with an idea of ‘peace’.)
the second poem is, if you didn’t already notice, very brief and whimsical – but brutally honest and true. i can’t wait to find out ‘what he’s been up to’ – with olivia and the rest of life: GOD is the great gift giver as well as the redeemer: there is no telling what new and perfect gifts GOD is going to speak into existence.
